Digital PERSPECTIVE
and Internet SCALE
Doing MORE of the SAME is rarely a recipe for success, yet it’s the one thing most of us get good at.
Sometimes, you need INSIGHT of an OUTSIDER to give you the perspective to propel your business forward. Time to reach out to Barbara TIEN.
After 30 years of experience in startups and public companies, Barbara now consults for other firms and brings her blend of strategic thinking and hands-on expertise to various business and product challenges.
As a co-founder of two startups and an early employee of two more, Barbara was involved in the transformative changes that produced high-speed broadband, the web, and modern mobile app technologies.
In taking her last startup, Ponga.com offline, Barbara created an off-ramp for members forming a free, interest-based community.
As “Post-Ponga,” word of mouth helped it quickly grow into a lively online community with events, workshops, and online discussions. By fall 2023, Barbara reformed the organization into a more permanent Projectkin.org with a broader appeal and a commitment to platform independance.
Today, she’s applying that experience and perspective to her personal interests including family history, storytelling, and digital media.
With feet in both GenX and Boomer generations, personal observations led her to study how new technologies have affected how families capture and preserve their stories — and their legacies.
Her experience at Ponga gave her insights into both the family history market, and how modern platforms work. Ponga was launched in the middle of the pandemic and quickly acquired a passionate following.
As a self-funded startup, there are always risks and scaled growth was difficult. The team chose to take it offline while they could do so gracefully.
Most of Barbara’s time today is devoted to the growing community at Projectkin.org, but she does take on occasional consulting projects in areas that interest her.
If you’d like to speak to her about such a project, please reach out using this form. She’ll follow up just as quickly as possible.
